BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD
Group Project: Alyssa Holcomb (Cafeteria), Tessa Cotton (Balcony)
This project sought out a sustainable revitalization of a space on campus. Looking at the Nigh University Center, and it's current use, it seemed to be a space in need of an update. To update sustainability and style that would have a direct impact on the users, the design concept of biophilia was introduced. By incorporating biophilia, it helps to enhance a connection to nature, and draws from humans' innate tendency to see out nature. Both spaces are directly connected to nature with their views of Broncho Lake, the landscape, and wildlife surrounding it. The food court and the Balcony Plaza, near Broncho Lake were chosen for their direct need for revitalization.
The food court on the second floor presented an opportunity for a new life. The food court was overflowing with students and could use a redesign to bring a connection of nature to students. The food court lacked a variety of seating, power outlets, and didn't encourage the recycling of waste. After observing and getting feedback from students, it was clear they needed and wanted a more comfortable space. The Balcony Plaza on the other hand, was almost not being used by students entirely. The space lacked any type of furniture, shade, and was almost unusable when geese are nesting in the planters.
