A site location in Ballston, Virginia, a division of Arlington, Virginia, was pin pointed to begin development of the residential space. External factors the client relies on include ease of transportation, proximity to big-city amenities, and a small-town culture for raising children. The foremost important factors for the interior of the home will be mitigated with a variation of lighting solutions, low maintenance materials, open space planning, and soft furniture to avoid physical accidents. The ranch-style house will be free of stairs and narrow spaces to prevent falls and enable space for a swinging walking cane. Multiple flooring selections and color contrast are tools that help the visually impaired become oriented in separate spaces. To avoid frustrations resulting from losing sight of small or dark items, light counter tops and open shelving help locate kitchen items easily. Larger windows bring in natural light and pairs with overhead and task lighting to maximize vision. With everything available “just around the corner” the client will enjoy comfortable living both inside and outside their beautiful home.
